Frequently Asked Questions

Publishing Questions

This is where all of your questions about publishing go

Why did you reject my work?

Rejections of your work are not based on you as a writer and do not determine your worth as a creative. We stress that writing is rejected based on its suitability for the journal. If you want to submit something, we advise you to do it as soon as you feel your submission is ready, as the 'shape' of the journal tends to be decided on the first few issues.
Regarding press rejections, this, again, is not personal. Publishing, as every industry does, goes through seasons. We encourage you to resubmit later, as when seasons change, your work might be right for us then.

What About Assessment?

Students are encouraged to create a document with all the relevant course materials and will be set weekly writing development tasks to complete, which will be assessed.

What about Progression?

Please see the Progression guide, which is included in the course booklet on the courses page. If you need this information in an alternative format, please use the contact form on this website and this shall be facilitated as much as possible.

What rights do you need?

We only need the rights to archive and publish for the journal.
We need the rights to publish and print your work for the press.
You retain the copyright to your work.

What if my question hasn't been answered? What do I do?

If you do, then please do not fret about emailing in with the header Question: [insert question]. In the body of the email, please expand on this; otherwise, it will go into our junk mail folder, and we will not see it. If you don't want to email in, then please contact the relevant social media channels.

I’ve got a course idea! Where can I recommend it?

Students can suggest the course to staff members or fill out a contact form. If students want to teach a session, this may be facilitated. If students want to become teachers of the courses, then experience (such as leading a session) must be demonstrated first, with the relevant qualifications.

Is there an option to partake in live sessions? And is there a cost difference?

There is an option to take part in wholly live or wholly non-live delivery (independent learning). To select this, you should be able to filter through the courses when they become available. Specific sessions in either route will be mandatory (such as workshopping sessions), but these can be split or configured on a day which works for the individual cohort or split into short sessions, or specially arranged to be in a 1-2-1 session with the tutor.
Although there may be a cost difference between the live and independent versions, this is so that the teachers and educators are paid for their time, and The Writers Den will try to minimise this cost, whilst paying everyone involved fairly for their experience and time.

Can I put my work in other places?

As the copyright holder of the original work, you have a great deal of flexibility after the issue is published. We only have the right to archive, which means you can distribute your work in numerous places. Depending on other journals, you can even submit it elsewhere and share it on your blog. The choice is yours.
If you choose to submit to the press, we will have the rights to publish. However, we will discuss how the royalties are divided. This means you can explore other projects and opportunities, but we will have the publication rights. You can rest assured that we will have a clear and fair discussion about the division of royalties.

Education Questions

What about Payment?

Whilst some courses are paid, there are payment plans (through subscriptions) which users can sign up to, which will help spread the cost of their learning. To see these, please either consult the Course guidebook or stay tuned for when this is published on the site.

How many hours do I need to commit to the course?

Lectures are catch-up and on demand, so students can watch them at their own pace, and these are up to an hour and a half (per week) for the course duration. Seminiars will be held once per week for up to two hours, but students can use the typing function and do not have to have their camrea/microphone on.
